The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating hackers’ claims that they broke into the bureau’s systems and stole thousands of current and former employees’ data, the bureau said in a statement Wednesday.
The group claims it breached the FBI itself, swiping data on a huge number of current and former employees — names, postal addresses, Social Security numbers — and Reuters partially verified some of it against credit bureau records.
