FBI reports $1.6B in impersonation scams using AI and fake uniforms

Between January 2025 and July 2026, scammers impersonating police and government officials—using AI, fake uniforms, and mock offices—defrauded victims of $1.6 billion. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center received close to 61,000 complaints of this type during the period, with some criminals even impersonating the IC3 itself.
