Smuggling boom creates black market economy in Gaza

A shadow economy has flourished in Gaza as traders supply banned goods including cigarettes and medical equipment through smuggling networks, according to traders, officials and residents reporting to Haaretz on 20 August 2026. Israeli soldiers and Hamas authorities have been implicated in the trade.
